How this works

Enter the net drywall area and the tool takes it off: sheets for both the 4x8 and 4x12 sizes, gallons of joint compound and feet of tape for a standard three-coat finish, and pounds of screws. It recommends a sheet size from the job size, since bigger sheets pay off on long walls but want two people to hang.

Compound, tape, and screws scale with the board area, not the sheet size, so switching sheet sizes only changes the sheet count and the number of seams you finish. Hang ceilings first, then walls tight to them, to bury the factory edges.

Common questions

How many drywall sheets do I need?

Divide the net area you are covering by the sheet area (32 square feet for a 4x8, 48 for a 4x12), add a cut-waste allowance, and round up. This tool does it for both sheet sizes so you can compare.

Should I use 4x8 or 4x12 sheets?

On long walls, 4x12 sheets put fewer butt joints on the wall, which means less tape and less finishing. The catch is they are heavy and awkward, really a two-person board. For smaller rooms or solo work, 4x8 sheets are far easier to handle with little seam penalty.

How much joint compound and tape?

A standard three-coat finish runs about one gallon of joint compound and forty feet of tape per hundred square feet of board. Screws come out to roughly one per square foot, about 320 to the pound. The tool figures all three from your area.

Does sheet size change the compound and tape?

Barely. Compound, tape, and screws scale with the area of board, not the sheet size. The 4x8 versus 4x12 decision is about how many seams you tape and how heavy the sheets are, not how much mud you buy.
